An homage to our parents today.
When we look at the words to this Psalm, it is an accounting of all that our parents wanted for us, taught us, and encouraged in us. We can nearly hear their counsel …
My steps have held to your paths;
my feet have not stumbled.
“My dad made me walk the straight and narrow!”
I call on you, my God, for you will answer me;
turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.
7 Show me the wonders of your great love,
you who save by your right hand
“If you are in trouble, pray! God will hear you!”
Show me the wonders of your great love,
you who save by your right hand
those who take refuge in you from their foes.
8 Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings
“Jesus loves the little children.”
from the wicked who are out to destroy me,
from my mortal enemies who surround me.
“There are some bad people out there.”
10 They close up their callous hearts,
and their mouths speak with arrogance.
11 They have tracked me down, they now surround me,
with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.
12 They are like a lion hungry for prey,
like a fierce lion crouching in cover.
“Watch out for the kids that act big and talk smart; that kind of friendship will just bring you down. ”
How grateful we are for parents who told us the truth and held us to it, and we are praying for those who parenting failed, or who failed their parents. Our Dear and Desperate Little Friends. Some of those were the “bad kids” in school and some are still, but for all they did not discover of the power and the love of God then, for all the fear of the Lord that didn’t “take” when they were young, we pray today.
After all, with the Lord, today is always the day of salvation.
Remember what it says: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.” (Hebrews 3:15, NIV)
